South Korea vs. North Korea Military Power Comparison

It is rare to see one country split into two enemies. We are talking about the South Korea vs. North Korea rivalry, two nations that were once united. The National Bureau of Economic Research found that competition drives higher investment in advancement and research, as rivals aim to stay ahead of one another.  Here is a look at the South Korea vs. North Korea Military Power Comparison—including the GDP, alliances, and key industrial sectors that set them apart.

Ground Forces

South Korea fields 400,000 active personnel, while North Korea’s force is nearly 2.75 times larger, with around 1,100,000. Seoul possesses roughly 3,000 tanks. Meanwhile, North Korea deploys over 4,000 tanks. South Korea is equipped with more than 12,237 artillery pieces and 2,000 multiple rocket launchers. On the other hand,  Pyongyang’s military includes 8,500 field artillery guns, 5,100 multiple rocket launchers, 11,000 air defence guns, and 21,600 artillery pieces.

Manpower

Both Koreas’ militaries rank among the top 10 in the world’s largest military reserves. North Korea has the fourth-largest armed forces globally. Let’s look at South Korea vs. North Korea’s active and reservist personnel.

  • South Korea has 580,000+ active military personnel
  • Seoul has more than 3 million reserve personnel.
  • On the other hand, North Korea has over 1.2 million active military personnel.
  • Pyongyang’s military has more than 6 million reserve personnel.

Foreign Military Presence

South Korea hosts more than 28,000 U.S. troops, making it the 3rd-largest U.S. troop host globally. Additionally, it hosts over 70 U.S. bases, making it the third most-bases. A massive footprint. Camp Humphreys in the Republic of Korea (ROK) is the largest US base of Americans outside the country.

Meanwhile, North Korea has no foreign bases. The difference is clear. Even if China and Russia wished to host bases there but can’t because of international pressure.

The Republic of Korea Armed Forces consists of roughly 70,000 active-duty personnel, while Pyongyang’s military operates a force of 60,000 active personnel. The gap in naval personnel between South Korea vs. North Korea is not as large as in the ground forces.

South Korea’s navy has 20 Destroyers. North Korea’s navy operates 2 Destroyers. Huge difference. But South Korea’s navy possesses 18 submarines, and  North Korea’s navy includes more than 71 submarines.

Airforce

Recent conflicts like USA-Iran and Russia-Ukraine show the importance of Air superiority. Let’s look at the South Korea vs. North Korea air forces. South Korea’s Air Force is made up of approximately 65,000 personnel.

  1. North Korea’s Air Force comprises approximately 110,000 personnel.
  2. According to IISS 2021, Seoul operates 579 combat aircraft.
  3. North Korea’s Air Force has 545 aircraft.
  4. South Korea uses American and domestically developed aircraft.
  5. North Korea has Russian and Chinese aircraft.

Alliances and International Support

During the Korean War, Seoul received help from America, the UK, and other countries. Meanwhile, Russia and China were the main supporters of Pyongyang. Looking at the current scenario, the situation is similar to what it was in the Korean War. South Korea’s major allies are still the USA, the UK, and other Western countries. In contrast, North Korea still gets strategic and diplomatic support from Russia and China.

Defense Budget

Seoul’s defence budget is increasing annually, and in 2026, it is around US$45B. And that’s important. Because the administration in Seoul sees increasing North Korea’s military spending as a big threat. The Republic of Korea (ROK) has a far larger military budget than Pyongyang’s military.  North Korea’s military expenditure is not publicly available, but it is estimated to be around US$4 billion to US$10 billion.

Nuclear Weapons

South Korea joined the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) to reassure the world they won’t possess nuclear weapons. And, till now, Seoul does not own nuclear weapons. But how does the Republic of Korea (ROK) protect itself from Kim Jong Un’s nuclear threat? Well. Under the U.S. nuclear umbrella, the South Korean government depends on it. Compared to North Korea, from different sources, it can be estimated that Pyongyang holds 50 to 90 nuclear warheads.

Intelligence Agencies

National Intelligence Service (NIS) is the main secret intelligence agency of South Korea. It was established 13 years after South Korea’s founding. From spying on the North Korean nuclear program to giving protection to defected North Korean senior leader Hwang Jang-yop are among the biggest achievements of the NIS.

In contrast, North Korea has the Reconnaissance General Bureau (RGB) Spy agency. The Sony Pictures Cyber Attack and the WannaCry Ransomware Attack were considered North Korean-based attacks. RGB does not work with many countries, just like NIS did with the USA, Japan,  and allied nations.

Economic Power

Good GDP means good economic power, and good economic power means being able to spend on the country’s defence. South Korea ranks among the top economies of the world with US$1.93 trillion. Integrated circuits, petroleum products, cars, ships and marine vessels, and smartphones are the main exports of the Republic of Korea (ROK). In comparison, North Korea’s GDP is 55 to 60 times smaller than South Korea’s. North Korea’s GDP is estimated to be between US$27 billion and US$40 billion. Coal, men’s and women’s apparel, and mollusks are the backbone of North Korea’s GDP.

Passport Strength

If you want to skip the queues, save time, and reduce travelling costs, then your passport must be strong. In this regard, South Korea is far ahead of North Korea in terms of passport strength. South Koreans hold the 2nd most powerful passport internationally. South Koreans can visit 188 countries with visa-free entry. At the same time, the North Korean passport is in the 96th position worldwide. North Koreans can only travel to 36 countries, which shows heavy travel restrictions.

Automotive Industry

One of a country’s biggest achievements is when its cars remain at the top of the car industry globally. Yes, we are talking about South Korea’s cars “Hyundai” and “Kia”. Genesis, GM Korea, KG Mobility, and Renault Korea are South Korean car brands.

On the other hand, North Korea’s car industry is limited compared to South Korea’s industry. Sungri Motor Plant was the first domestic automobile manufacturer. After the Sungri Motor Plant, Pyeonghwa Motors, Tokchon Motor Plant, and Pyongsang Auto Works are among North Korea’s primary automotive manufacturers.

Mobile Industry

“Samsung” needs no introduction to anyone around the world. South Korea owns the biggest mobile brand, “Samsung”. Apart from Samsung, LG was a popular mobile brand, but they left the market in 2021. Pantech, SK Teletech, and KT Tech were homegrown South Korean companies once.

In contrast, North Korea also produces its own smartphone brands, such as Arirang, Pyongyang, Phurunhanal, and Jindallae.  But North Korean phones are neither accessible nor functional outside the country due to international sanctions.

Final Thoughts

From the South Korea vs. North Korea military power comparison, we see how some countries, like North Korea, prioritize self-reliant national security. Others, like South Korea, balance external defense partnerships with a primary focus on economic prosperity. Many analysts believe that North Korea won’t give up its nuclear weapons and is ready to bear sanctions. The defence of any country is important for survival, but diplomatic ties and economic cooperation with other countries are vital too.
